From Goodreads:
When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have been cursed with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.
Now sixteen, Ruby has spent nearly half her life desperately trying to hide the fact that she’s outwitted the camp’s sorting system—that she isn’t powerless, or safe. She’s one of the dangerous ones… and everyone knows what happens to them.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of teens who escaped their own camp, pursued along the way by terrifying bounty hunters. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close to him. Not after what happened to her parents.
When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Before the end, Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

This book looks super interesting, I'm hoping to add it to my collection of dystopian/Sci if novels :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great read that is right up my alley. A bit dark and creepy, and really makes you think. thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteAGH, I wanna read this one SO BAD! The cover is amazing and the entire description just sounds so exciting.
ReplyDeleteDid you enter? :)
DeleteI am "jelly" (always wanted to use that word) that you went to BEA; I wish I could have gone. The Darkest Minds was on my WL (had I gone to BEA)!
ReplyDeleteI loved loved Alex's debut book, BRIGHTLY WOVEN, and had to read DARKEST MINDS.
DeleteIt's not like you live a thousand miles away from NYC! YOU need to come!
DeleteI know. I feel like I keep making excuses every year for BEA :/
DeleteI think this book sounds awesome! The description sounds great and I enjoy following Alex on tumblr/twitter so I'm looking forward to checking out her novels! :)
ReplyDeleteI loved Bracken's Brightly Woven, I am completely DYING to read this!
ReplyDeleteThe dscription screams Dystopian to me, and I love dystopian novels. If not that, then it's also a book where the main character is trying to defeat the system, and that is awesome. :D
ReplyDeleteI wanted to pick this one up at BEA, but I ended up having a conflict on Thursday morning when her signing was (also: I didn't want to wade in on the madness that was the Disney Hyperion booth on Tuesday morning). I liked, but didn't LOVE Bracken's first novel, but I assume her writing has matured a lot and I'm excited to see what she has put together!
ReplyDeleteCecelia, the Disney/Hyperion booth was nuts. I just stood back and watched the madness. They put them out on the three days, I guess I grabbed on Wednesday and Thursday, not realizing.
DeleteI always hear such great things about Bracken's writing and've been eager to see it, but I never got a chance to read BRIGHTLY WOVEN--THE DARKEST MINDS would be a great place to start!
ReplyDeleteI would like to win this book because I recently develop an obsession for dystopian books and this one captivated me with that great description on the back, plus look at that cover. And base on some of the reviews I've read on goodreads, this feels like a book that could leave a lasting impression.
